Embracing the Heart of Papua New Guinea
My Volunteering Journey

At the age of 50, I embarked on a journey that would forever change my life—volunteering amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Papua New Guinea (PNG). My adventure began with the iconic Kokoda Track, where I not only experienced the stunning beauty of the terrain but also delivered essential healthcare to the resilient people who call this incredible land home.

From the moment I set foot in PNG, I was welcomed with open arms by the locals, whose warmth and kindness left an indelible mark on my heart. It was this genuine hospitality that ignited my passion for returning year after year, deepening my connection with the country and its people. Over the past decade, aside from the challenging years of the COVID-19 pandemic, I have had the privilege of volunteering annually—each trip more enriching than the last.

During our eight to ten-day missions, the team and I travel by boat along the coastal track, visiting remote villages that often lack access to basic healthcare. Each village presents unique challenges, from administering vaccinations and treating infections to addressing injuries and managing fungal ailments. The diversity of cases we encounter is vast, but our commitment to improving the health of these communities remains unwavering.

The work we do in these villages is not only about providing medical assistance; it’s about building relationships. The gratitude expressed by the locals is a testament to the impact we make. Their smiles, laughter, and heartfelt thanks remind me of why I chose this path as a nurse and midwife. Each interaction deepens my appreciation for the cultural richness and resilience of the people of Papua New Guinea.

Papua New Guinea is a land of incredible diversity—both in its breathtaking landscapes and its vibrant cultures. My volunteering experiences have allowed me to witness the beauty of this diversity firsthand, from the lush rainforests to the vibrant communities.
